Mayan Hills Butterfly Museum

Butterflies are given the scientific name of lepidoptera (meaning scaly wings), because their wings are covered by thousands of tiny, imbricate scales.

Butterflies are given the scientific name of lepidoptera (meaning scaly wings), because their wings are covered by thousands of tiny, imbricate scales.

Their vast diversity and adaptability to any climate place them among the most successful evolutionary creatures on earth.

We have a program of reproduction of native species of Honduras (more than 30 species), which flutter free in their botanical garden offering us a real show. There, we can observe the life cycle of a butterfly in detail, which is divided into 4 stages. All butterflies undergo a process of  “complete metamorphosis” meaning that to become an adult, they have to travel through the following 4 phases: egg, larva, chrysalis and adult.

The museum is located a few meters from the edge of the town of Copan Ruinas on the road that leads to the Guatemalan border.
